About Wendy

Wendy is a Lymington based artist originally from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. She has two main subjects: the industrial landscapes of Yorkshire and the scenic landscapes of Derbyshire, particularly the Peak District she visited on childhood holidays. The two subjects may seem to contrast, but her colour palettes and themes often merge — chimneys and smoke appear in the distance, and she uses artistic licence to bring them together, showing how beautiful rolling hills have long been shaped and consumed by industry.

More recently, her work has been influenced by her surroundings in Hampshire, where she lives near Lymington and the edge of the New Forest. Here, the push and pull between nature and human activity is equally present, with the oil industry and other developments pressing on the coastline and forest. Her paintings capture this  balance with layering atmosphere and texture, to reflect landscapes that are at once scenic and industrial, fragile but also resilient.

Wendy Merry

“Like many people from this area my family were involved in the industry of Sheffield for generations. People seem to have a powerful response to my industrial landscape work appealing to feelings of nostalgia, family and community.”
